History of the Playground
In 1985 a group of local residents got together to discuss the lack of play facilities on Norley Hall estate.

In February of the following year local volunteers, community workers and children themselves helped to drain the land and build play structures. The play structures were made using materials such as old telegraph poles and railway sleepers. The local schools soon got involved with the project and Norley Hall Adventure Playground was created.

Two workers and a pool of volunteers staff the playground with funding coming from Leisure, Housing, Health and Education.

The adventure playground grew out of a movement dedicated to children’s freedom of expression in an outdoor environment and has changed over the years and is still developing in response to changing needs and changes in legislation. Always at the heart of these changes is an ethos that children need a chance to explore, test, create and rebuild their world freely in their own way.

The Playground was first refurbished in 2003 using money from SRB6, Heinz PLC & People & Places. Children & Young people who attend the playground where heavily involved from the start of the project from completing consultations to making decisions on various designs.

The children and young people had the opportunity to visit various other Adventure Play facilities in England and Wales to experience the different types of play equipment available to them for their new Playground.
