Wigan Food and Drink Festival 2014

IN one of the most successful years so far for Wigan Food and Drink Festival, around 30,000 people are estimated to have enjoyed the feast of fun that took place across the borough over 11 days.


The festival – sponsored by Euromark - started with a bustling pirate-themed CAMRA beer festival that saw 3,500 people come through the doors to try 60 real ales, 35 real ciders and perries and a great selection of foreign draft beers, plus live music and food.


Highlights through the week included lively demonstrations in the town centre Kitchen Theatre from Great British Bake Off winner and Wigan’s own John Whaite, celebrity cheese maker Sean Wilson, and chefs from a range of local restaurants.


People also enjoyed the first Wigan Wine Festival, held at Haigh Hall, and a trip on the Brewery Bus, which toured the town’s three micro-breweries. Crowds also flocked to the continental market in the town centre, which opened for five days offering everything from kangaroo burgers to paella.


Festival organiser Keith Bergman said: “This year’s event has been a fantastic celebration of local food and drink and we’re delighted so many local people got in the spirit and tried their hand at baking during the festival.


“Young bakers went head to head in the Mini Baker of the Year competition, proving we’ve got some real up and coming talent in the borough, and we also had some impressive loaves entered into the bread competition held at Wigan Library.


“It’s been a great year – thank you to all our sponsors and to everyone who turned out to join in the celebrations!”
