Wigan and Leigh youngsters mini Olympics finale

WIGAN and Leigh youngsters will mark the finale of the 2008 Beijing games with their own mini Olympic showdown.

During the summer holidays Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust is holding 21 sport camps across the borough to boost young people’s interest and participation in sport.

To mark the end of the Olympic Games in China three camps from both the east and west of the borough will meet at the Robin Park Arena and Leigh Sports Village to compete in their own mini Olympics.

A similar event was held to mark the start of the games.

Organiser Craig Anthony from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit said Team GB’s best performance for 100 years and their magnificent tally of gold medals had inspired many of the borough’s youngsters.

He said: “The enthusiasm generated by the Olympics has been outstanding.

“The children have been chatting about what they’ve seen on TV and how well the nation has done in the Olympics.

“They’re keen to follow that up themselves and we’ve pointed them in the direction of clubs to join.

“Who knows, these mini Olympics may have inspired a future generation of Olympians.”

Camps taking part at Robin Park Arena include those run at Abraham Guest High school, Orrell, Robin Park Arena and at Hawkley Hall High school.
At Leigh, Howe Bridge camp will compete against camps based at Westleigh and St Mary’s High school.

Organised for eight to 14-year-olds, more than 160 children will take part in a number of athletics and sporting competitions during the day.
The sports camps have been organised as part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s vision to “Get Wigan Active and Improve People’s Lives”.
