Sample the Great Outdoors at Family Fun Day

Photo Opportunity: Photographers are invited to attend the Family Fun Day on Thursday 29th May – peak time is around 12pm. Please report to the main visitor centre and ask for Jennifer Taylor.

There’s no better place to sample the green heart of Wigan Borough than the beautiful countryside at the Three Sisters Recreation Area and Viridor Wood near Ashton-in-Makerfield.

On Thursday 29th May local families are invited to share the fun experience of getting outside and active at a Family Fun Day.

There will be the chance to watch birds of prey swoop through the sky, try your hand at circus skills or even scale the heights of the mobile climbing wall thanks to Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s team of rangers who have teamed up with the Forestry Commission.

The fun-packed day includes something for all age groups; suitable for toddlers through to grandparents. The following activities take place at the Three Sisters and neighbouring Viridor Wood from 10.30am through to 5pm:
• canoeing;
• archery lessons;
• orienteering;
• circus skills;
• face painting;
• climbing wall;
• woodland crafts including woodturning;
• dog agility and obedience displays;
• birds of prey and flying display.
• bungee run;
• and a rodeo.

There will also be an expert vet on hand to give advice and dog chipping. The Three Sisters Rack Track will provide the opportunity for you to have a photograph alongside their cars. A small charge applies for some of the activities.

John Woodward, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Head Ranger at the Three Sisters, said, “The fun day at the Three Sisters Recreation Area has now become an annual event providing a great family day out. There are lots of activities taking place for people to get involved in or they could just bring along a picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings”.

Katie Horgan, Community Ranger with the Forestry Commission, said, “We are delighted to be working with the Three Sisters team again to host a Family Fun Day. Viridor Wood is a fantastic place to explore and get active in and this is a chance for people to get a taste of what both areas have to offer. It will be a really fun day and we hope it will help give all generations a greater appreciation of what natural beauty we have in this area.”

Disabled access to the site is available, but please phone ahead so that the rangers can make provision. For further details on the Family Fun Day, or for general information on the Three Sisters Recreation Area, please call 01942 720453, or visit www.wlct.org/greenspaces.
