Get Bowled Over at Wigan Libraries
Photo Opportunities: These can be
arranged prior to the start of the events or during the sessions from
17th May. Please contact Georgina Bentley on 01942 486930 if you intend
to photograph one of the sessions.
Wigan Libraries are looking to find the
best ten pin bowlers across the borough as they invite everyone, young
and old, to ‘get active’ on the Nintendo Wii console this May (17th-31st
May).
The Wii tournament forms part of the National Year of Reading calendar
of events, with the month of May having the theme of ‘Mind and Body’.
Sessions are taking place all across the borough (see table below for
dates and times), starting off at the Wiend Children’s Centre on 17th
May and closing at both Wigan and Leigh Libraries on the 31st May. The
tournament is open to people of all ages and is free to enter.
Andrew Pickup, Children’s Operations Officer for Wigan Leisure and
Culture Trust commented: “People traditionally think of books when they
think about libraries but for this month’s theme of ‘Mind and Body’ we
wanted to be a bit more creative and actually get people active within
their local libraries. Wii is very popular at the moment so we thought
that this would be the perfect way to get families involved.
Andrew continued: “Today’s libraries have both games consoles and PCs.
In some libraries there are also games for hire which can provide
interactive fun as well as education.”
Another of the National Year of Reading’s aims is to encourage more
people to join their local library so that they can gain free access to
a wide range of services such as free Internet access, book loans,
reading groups and learning opportunities. For more information about
joining your local library visit
