Drama students become “Teechers”

John Godber’s smash hit play “Teechers” is being performed at the end of the month as part of Wigan Pier Theatre Company’s programme of community drama events.

This comedy masterpiece will run for three nights and features 20 local amateur actors, under the direction of Martin Green, Development Officer for Wigan Pier Theatre Company.

Set in Whitewall High – a modern but dysfunctional school – it tells the story of a new drama teacher, Nixon, arriving to find that life at the school will be a massive challenge. From the beginning of one term to the end of another, we meet cynical teachers, an obstructive caretaker, the school bully and a whole host of mischievous students who create mayhem around Nixon.

“Teechers” was originally written for three actors who double-up to play over twenty roles. However, due to the growing numbers within Wigan Pier’s community theatre group, this popular play was selected because it could accommodate a larger cast.

Martin explains: “Godber used a small cast in a theatrical way partly as a means of coping with decreasing theatre budgets when the play was written. It will be interesting to see what people think of our interpretation because a larger cast can create different opportunities and a bigger energy to the performance”.

The play will also be peppered with popular 80’s music such as “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and Rocky Horror’s “Time Warp”.

Appropriately, the play will be performed in a local high school. Hawkley Hall High School on Carr Lane has hosted Wigan Pier Theatre Company events for a number of years and makes a fitting setting for “Teechers”. It will be performed in the Drama Studio (Block ‘E’) between Wednesday 30th April and Friday 2nd May at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 and £3 (pay on the door).

“Teechers” is a very popular play with both GCSE and Performing Arts students as well as people who have a taste for contemporary theatre.

Wigan Pier Community Theatre is funded by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and was established in 2003.
