Dozens of staff who play a key role in
operating the biggest charitable trust of its kind in England have been
honoured for their loyalty and excellent standard of work.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has held its first ever Staff
Commendation Awards. Among the winners were 38 members of staff with
nearly a 1,000 years service between them. Awards were handed out to
librarians, sports centre staff, administrators, gardeners and heritage
staff to mark their 20, 30 and 40 years worth of service.
As well as honouring long service, the revamped awards also recognised
the efforts and achievements of Trust staff across six different
categories.
The awards went to:
• Top Team: Active Living Team;
• Leading by Example: Sheila O’Brien (winner), Tyldesley Library
(runner-up);
• Giving Something Back: Senior Peer Mentors (volunteers with Active
Living);
• Partnership Working: Platt Bridge Library project group;
• Breakthrough: Neighbourhood Renewal Fund Project Team;
• Exceptional Achievement in Learning: David Hebblethwaite;
In addition a special honorary award was presented to Cemetery Service
Manager Tony Bassett and his dedicated team who received several
nominations.
‘Leading by Example’ winner Sheila O’Brien, who works as a Centres
Officer at Golborne and Platt Bridge libraries was also honoured for her
20 years of service. Sheila said: “I first came to libraries on a four
week contract to cover sickness - and I'm still here 20 years later!
I’ve seen lots of change s in the time and had a number of different
roles. I have always found my colleagues to be the best part of the job
and I was particularly moved when my staff nominated me for this award.
“The job can be very demanding, so it’s very reassuring to know that our
efforts are appreciated and a timely reminder that all our front line
staff are the most important asset we have.”
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Rodney Hill gave out the awards
alongside Trustee Jean Garlick. Rodney said: “I am honoured to have
presented these awards; we are very, very proud of the great work that
our staff do. We are a large organisation with a huge variety of
services to deliver so it is very important that everyone has a chance
to be recognised for their achievements. Everyone is part of the same
team working towards the same goals and we always strive to achieve
excellence. The staff here today have proved just what can be achieved
through passion, dedication and talent.”
