Food, Glorious Food - Share Your Special Recipes

Now residents in Wigan and Leigh are being asked to share their culinary secrets and have their most beloved recipes published and served up as part of a project called ‘Eat With Strangers’.

Eat With Strangers is a special event inspired by ‘Pot Luck’, a video being exhibited in the Turnpike’s ‘Art With Strangers’. Filmed in New York by Swiss artist Sonja Feldmeier, ‘Pot Luck’ features meetings between the artist and immigrants in places where they could get their favourite food.

For budding Nigella Lawsons, or amateur food fans there is a chance for everyone to get involved in Eat With Strangers. Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Arts and Festivals Team is trying to discover just what our favourite foods and recipes mean to us. Whether you are stirred by Lancashire Hot Pot or inspired by Sticky Toffee Pudding the team want to hear your gastronomic tales.

All of the accepted recipes will be included in a booklet to be used as part of the Turnpike Gallery’s ‘Art with Strangers’ exhibition from 17th May to 5th July. A selection of the recipes will also be prepared and served during a special free event, ‘Eat with Strangers’, at the Turnpike on Saturday 28th June.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Arts Development Officer Sam Dawson said: “Food plays such an important role in our lives, not just functionally but also socially and culturally. We would like to hear from anyone who has a favourite recipe they would like to share with us. This could be a traditional recipe, a family favourite, or something you have found on your travels. We want recipes that evoke memories of a special time or place in your life.”

To be part of Eat With Strangers, send a copy of your favourite recipe, including the ingredients and instructions on how to prepare it. Also include a few sentences on where the recipe came from and why it is special to you. Please include your name and contact details in case you need to be contacted.

Recipes can be sent by post to: Sam Dawson (Arts Development Officer – Community Engagement), Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Elizabeth House, Pottery Road, The Pier, Wigan WN3 4BD. Or emailed to: samantha.dawson@wlct.org  Recipes need to be received by Wednesday 23rd April.

For further information contact Sam Dawson on 01942 486917.
