Residents from across Wigan Borough and beyond donned their red socks on
Sunday to take part in Leigh Sports Village’s first ever Sport Relief
Mile.
Despite the chilly conditions a capacity number of 400 colourfully
dressed ‘milers’ took part in the run organised by Wigan Leisure and
Culture Trust with support from Leigh Harriers and Sainsbury’s of Leigh.
The race was started Leigh Harriers and Great Britain marathon runner
Peter Riley. People ran, or walked, 1, 3 or 6 miles and have helped to
raise thousands of pounds for worthy causes.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Community Activity Officer Emma Moran
who led the organisation of the event said: “We were delighted to see
such a high turn out on what was a great day. I would like to thank
everyone who gave up their time to help out, particularly Joe Galvin,
Peter Riley and the Leigh Harriers team. We got a fantastic response
from the public and we are so pleased that everyone showed great spirit
and enthusiasm and had a fun time.”
Sport Relief harnesses the power and passion of sport to change lives
for the better. By taking part in sport, having fun and raising money,
everyone can do good and feel good. Comic Relief spends the money raised
to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in
the UK and in the world’s poorest countries. Over 200 miles took place
across the country.
The Leigh Sports Village Mile took place in waves from 10am to 12pm on
Sunday 16th March. The event took place at Leigh Harriers’ brand new
running track at Leigh Sports Village off Atherleigh Way in Leigh.
