The final curtain is set to fall on a three year community theatre
project that has successfully united amateur actors of all ages on the
Higher Folds estate in Leigh.
The premier of the specially commissioned play ‘Murphy’s Shadow’ takes
place on Wednesday 12th March at Higher Folds Community Centre with
additional performances on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th March.
This brand new production is the final celebratory performance in a
three year programme co-ordinated by Wigan Pier Theatre Company, part of
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.
‘Murphy’s Shadow’, penned by local playwright Julie McKiernan, was
funded by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust’s ‘Communities That Work’
programme. The project follows on from previous performances of ‘A
Higher View’ and ‘The Folk On The Hill’, where youth theatre members
teamed up with the newly established adult theatre group to entertain
the local community.
Murphy’s Shadow is set at a community centre celebration. The play
depicts the strained relationships between a group of long time friends
who are at different stages in their lives. The play flashes between the
present day and 1988 reflecting the contrasting attitudes of the adults
when they were younger and had aspirations. Music and song from the
younger performers is interwoven throughout the production.
Wigan Pier Theatre Company Development Officer Martin Green said: “The
last three years on the Higher Folds estate have been hugely creative.
In that time we established the youth drama group but also encouraged an
adult theatre group to be set up. The project has resulted in some great
performances with the community coming together to produce something
that is both fun and has helped to build the confidence of individuals
involved.
“Some of the youth theatre members have even performed at conferences
and events over the three year period of our work at Higher Folds. We
were particularly pleased with the Youth Theatre Festival last year,
where many of the young people performed in front of a live audience for
the first time in their lives. We would like people to come along to the
final performances and see for themselves what a talented and passionate
group we have developed here. We hope to continue working in Higher
Folds in a dramatic way.”
Murphy’s Shadow will be performed at 7.30pm on the 12th, 13th and 14th
March at the Higher Folds Community Centre on Stirling Close in Leigh.
Tickets are available on the door priced at just £2.50 each. Seating
capacity is limited to 100 so please turn up early. For further
information contact Martin Green on 01942 486919.
