Own a Piece of Wigan Pier’s Heritage
Local community groups, schools and heritage buffs are being given a
unique chance to take away a piece of Wigan Pier’s illustrious history.
An open day is being held at The Way We Were at Wigan Pier on Saturday
23rd February between 10am and 2pm where people can bid for a range of
replica items formerly displayed at the much loved heritage attraction.
The Way We Were closed in December 2007. Items on offer include the
Victorian lamps, the famous seaside display, various mannequins and
other scenery items. None of the official heritage collection will be
available for offer.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Heritage Services Manager Carole
Tyldesley said: “We are currently in the process of decommissioning The
Way We Were building. As part of the process we would like to give
people the opportunity to own their own piece of the centre’s history.
Many of the items could be re-used by groups in the community, other
museums or local schools.
“Nothing original or donated is available but some of the scenery items
are instantly recognisable as part of The Way We Were. Legally we have
to charge a small fee for items but the intention is that these items
are put back into good use across the borough.”
Following the open day, all offers need to be received in writing by
Friday 7th March. Items will be offered to the highest bidder.
Successful bidders must arrange collection by Friday 14th March.
The Way We Were open day takes place on Saturday 23rd February between
10am and 2pm. Interested parties must telephone 01942 776088 to secure a
place at the open day.
