Leigh residents of all ages have the chance to pull on their red socks
for charity this spring as Leigh’s magnificent new sports village hosts
a Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has teamed up with Leigh Harriers to
organise Leigh’s first ever Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 16th March as
part of the national charity event.
In 2006 a staggering 400,000 men, women and children took part in the
Sport Relief Mile across the UK. Places are limited so people are
encouraged to sign up for The Leigh Sports Village Mile as soon as
possible – everyone is welcome.
This year’s Milers are encouraged to kit themselves out in a pair of red
Sport Relief Socks available from Sainsbury’s stores and
www.sportrelief.com Other official Sport Relief merchandise is also
available, so even those who can’t take part can support Sport Relief.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Community Activity Officer Emma Moran
said: “We’re delighted that Leigh Sports Village has been selected to
host this exciting event. In 2006 we held a successful event at Robin
Park Arena raising thousands of pounds; this year we wanted to bring it
to Leigh. Everyone is welcome to join us no matter what your level of
ability. What better way could there be of christening the new athletics
track than by using it to raise money for Sport Relief. We would like to
thank Leigh Harriers and Leigh Sports Village Company for their support
with this event.”
Sport Relief harnesses the power and passion of sport to change lives
for the better. By doing sport, having fun and raising money, everyone
can do good and feel good. Comic Relief spends the money raised to help
vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK
and in the world’s poorest countries.
Over 200 miles will take place across the country. A team of sporting
stars have already lined up to show their support to the national
campaign including Dame Kelly Holmes, Zara Phillips, Fearne Cotton and
Darren Gough.
Leigh Harriers’ Chairman Joe Galvin said: “This event is a superb way of
supporting a charity and it’s something all of the family can get
involved. It’s also the chance to run, or walk, on a first class running
track. Hopefully, taking part in the Mile will inspire people to
continue to keep active and get involved in athletics her in Leigh.”
The Leigh Sports Village Mile will take place in waves from 10.30am to
1.30pm on Sunday 16th March. The Mile takes place at Leigh Harriers new
running track at Leigh Sports Village off Atherleigh Way in Leigh.
Those wishing to take part can register online at
www.sportrelief.com or
by calling 0871 200 1515. Everyone who signs up to join the Mile will be
provided with an entry kit and will be issued with a time. For further
