The wild bird population at Pennington Flash has received a welcome
pre-spring boost this week thanks to the donation of new nest boxes.
Leigh Ornithological Society has kindly donated twelve bird boxes and
two bat boxes to the nationally important nature reserve managed by
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust. The high quality, hard wearing boxes
are woodpecker and squirrel proof, meaning that smaller birds such as
the rare willow tit will have a chance to thrive in the park.
The boxes will be put up around the park in the run up to National Nest
Box Week which takes place from 14th to 21st February the aim of which
is to focus the nation’s attention on the provision of nest boxes for
Britain’s birds and other wildlife.
The society has supported the reserve for many years through their
involvement in the user group and has made regular donations to erect
hides and purchase winter bird food.
Leigh Ornithological Society Chairman David Shalcross said: “Leigh
Ornithological Society has been involved with the preservation of
Pennington Flash for many years dating back to the 30s and 40s. We will
continue to support the Flash as much as we can and are delighted to
make this donation. The donation was made possible via the Council’s
Brighter Borough Fund. We are grateful to the Environmental Services
Department and especially Councillor Jonathan Miller for their support
in this matter.”
Pennington Flash’s team of rangers are delighted by the donation. Ranger
Pauline Greenhalgh said: “We have an excellent relationship with the
society and are delighted by this donation. Pennington is a haven for
bird lovers and is renowned nationwide. We hope this will play some part
in securing the future of many of our rarer wild birds for future
generations of visitors to learn about and enjoy.”
