Older residents across the borough can enjoy their outdoor activities in
safety thanks to a new initiative launched by Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust.
As part of the ‘Al Fresco’ outdoor activity initiative launched by the
Trust’s Active Living Team, free personal safety taster sessions for the
over 50s will take place in local community venues across the borough
from January.
The tasters are delivered by qualified self defence instructors and aim
to encourage residents to feel confident about getting active outdoors.
Each session includes tips on how to avoid confrontation, information on
individual rights and the law, identifying vulnerable areas on the body
and other practical skills on how to keep safe.
Dorset Road Community Centre in Hagfold, Atherton will host the first
session on Wednesday 16th January with a further session at Ince Public
Hall on Wednesday 13th February; both are from 1 until 3pm. The final
taster takes place on Wednesday 19th March at Marsh Green Community
Centre from 10am to 12 noon. All sessions are free of charge.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Active Living Officer Alison Griffin
said: “These tasters are ideal to give people the confidence to
participate in outdoor activities safely. We want people to feel
self-assured in their local area and have the know how to participate in
outdoor activities in the borough’s many green spaces. We have some
wonderful countryside walks and scenery in the borough, and we want
people to enjoy them with their families without fear.”

a place, contact the Active Living Team on 01942 488481.
