Hindley Heats Up for Summer Youth Project

The summer holidays can often drag, but a new youth project based in Hindley promises to banish the boredom and provide a fun time for all.

The Hindley Youth Project, coordinated by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, has a jam packed calendar of activities for young people aged from 11 to 21. Whether it is archery in Raynor Park, mountain biking at Borsdane Wood or DJ’ing at the sports centre, Hindley will be an activity hotspot during August.

The Trust along with representatives from St John’s Methodist Church, Hindley Residents Association and Youth Services consulted over one hundred young people from the Hindley area to discuss their leisure needs. It was then up to local lads and lasses to choose their three favourite activities to be included in the summer timetable; and the Trust has listened.

John Hesketh, Community Regeneration Manager for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: “We were concerned about the amount of anti-social behaviour in the Hindley area and meetings of the Township Community Safety Group highlighted the limited range of recreational opportunities in the area. Our aim is to channel the energy of young people into activities that are not only fun but will provide them with new skills.”

With the summer heatwave fast approaching, the Hindley Youth Project’s many water based activities will be a welcome relief. Events include wind and wave sailing at Scotsmans Flash and canoe and water safety training at Dover Lock. All the watery fun kicks off at Scotsmans Flash on Saturday 28th July with a free festival of water activities and barbeque.

Sports fanatics can book a place on Multi-Sports Summer Camps being held at Hindley Leisure Centre. Younger children who prefer a quieter life can enjoy Hindley Library’s free summer reading scheme.

John Hesketh said: “We believe that this project will have a positive impact on the Hindley community. There is definitely something for everyone and the great thing about these activities is that they encourage young people to get active and appreciate how valuable their local surroundings are.”
