Following the recent launch of ‘Pride in YOUR Parks’ and with the school
holidays finally here, what better way is there to spend the summer than
indulging in some fun activities and relaxation at your local park?
There are a huge range of fun activities for friends and families to
choose from in the borough’s vast green spaces. Whether it be delighting
in open air theatre at Haigh Hall and Country Park, discovering ancient
remedies from plants in Leigh’s Lilford Park or simply joining one of
the many health walks on offer; there is something for everyone to
enjoy.
Activities in Wigan’s parks range from bat walks and treasure trails to
brass band performances and practical conservation days. Meanwhile,
parks in the Leigh area will be holding bug hunts for young children and
sporting activities for all ages, in a series of ‘Get Active - Be Alive’
events.
Claire Duffy, Deputy Manager of Haigh Hall and Country Park said: “Haigh
Hall was given to the people of Wigan by the Crawford family a few
hundred years ago and we hope that this campaign will encourage them to
feel some ownership towards the park. Our range of summer activities
provide something for people to do and enjoy over the summer and we hope
they will develop a sense of respect for the Hall’s beautiful
surroundings. We welcome people of all ages to enjoy the splendour of
Haigh Hall and the Plantations, just as its creators intended.”
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust believe that by encouraging local people
to spend more of their time in local parks and green spaces they will
feel a sense of responsibility and ownership towards them. The Trust is
committed to maintaining and developing these areas but more community
involvement is needed to tackle long term issues such as nuisance
behaviour and vandalism.
Sharon Saunders, Parks and Countryside Activities Manager for Wigan
Leisure and Culture Trust said: “We hope that by working with the people
of the borough to instil a sense of pride in our community, the message
will be strong enough to eventually stamp out the vandalism and litter
in our parks. After all, as people will see from this summer’s events,
activities in our parks can offer healthy outdoor fun of the sporting,
educational and artistic kind. We are very fortunate to have so many
green spaces almost on our doorstep, so why waste them?”
