Hot on the Square is back and it’s better
than ever. This fabulous three day festival will ignite the streets of
Leigh with a flourish of fun, laughter and carnival mayhem, as it paves
the way for the first ever Leigh Mela.
Families can enjoy a long weekend of exciting performances from a number
of local and international artists from across the performing arts
spectrum at the Civic Square, Leigh.
Both Hot on the Square and Leigh Mela are free events and promise to be
a real mix of music, dance and street entertainment. The festivities
begin with Hot on the Square which runs from 12 noon to 2pm from
Wednesday 25th through to Friday 27th July. The Leigh Mela takes place
on Saturday 28th July from 12 till 5pm.
Highlights of this year’s Hot on the Square line up include:
• Bread and Butter Theatre Company: Compere Gray Gifford will be back on
the square, bringing his own brand of hilarious banter and audience
participation.
• Urban Canvas: The masters of visual pavement art.
• Vamos: Celebrate our multi-cultural world in a story of Ugandan music.
• Three Hours Theatre: Polish folk games and dance.
• Kozman Ti Dalon: Incredible music performances of Maloya music.
• Belmont Freetown: Music and dance from across the nations.
• La Zona (pictured): Spice up the square with Costa Rican hip hop.
Hot on the Square, organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, will
also feature local dance groups such as the Tyldesley Marionettes
alongside Dynamite Dancers and Tyldesley Street Dance Group.
Chris Wyatt, Arts and Festivals Manager for Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust, said: “Hot on the Square is such a fantastic family day out. The
acts are always spectacular and this year promises to be no different.
We think that this is a great opportunity to fuse our culture with many
others from across the world and what better way to do that than through
the arts.
“We are so pleased to introduce the Leigh Mela and are sure that it will
be as well received as Hot on the Square has been in previous years. Not
only is this a first for Leigh but it’s the newest recruit to our long
list of free festivals in the borough. All we need is some great weather
and the events will be perfect”
Leigh Mela, which is coordinated by the Trust and Leigh Neighbours
Project, will see acts such as Ecludir Azul from Portugal with a show
full of dance, movement and percussion and performances from Officina
Pulcinella Street Theatre Project who run free circus workshops for
young people. The Thistle Society, Higher Folds Morris Dancers, and
Zimbabwe’s Hohodza Band feature alongside local drum masters, the Anvil
Street Drummers.
Leigh Neighbours Project was established by the Leigh Township Forum
with the aim of breaking down barriers between the different communities
that form Leigh and celebrate 'Neighbour-LEIGH-ness'. For further
