Whether it is on the beach, in the garden or simply from the comfort of
your favourite armchair, everyone loves a good summer read.
Now there is simply no need to pay high street prices to keep up with
all this year’s page-turners. Fiction, thriller, comedy or romance;
Wigan Borough’s libraries have a great stock of all the best-sellers and
can give expert advice to customers about what’s going to be flying off
the shelves this summer.
Reading can provide an escape from the stresses and strains of daily
life. Books are such a great way of distracting people from their
problems; they can even help to reduce stress and can help to overcome
anxiety, depression and social isolation.
Alison Hilton, Manager of Wigan Library, said: “Many people have trouble
trying to justify taking time out from their busy lives to read,
especially when it’s just for pleasure. Leisure activities like reading
are often the things that slide when life goes into overdrive and that’s
sad because it’s an activity that can make life richer and more
enjoyable. Summer is a perfect time to change old habits, long light
evenings are ideal opportunities to sit back and relax, and what better
way of doing it than with a book?”
Alison reviews this summer’s hot reads:
Pies and Prejudice; In search of the North by Stuart Maconie:
“Wigan writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie takes us on a hilarious
journey in search of where the clichés end and the truth begins. He
travels from Wigan Pier to Blackpool Tower, the Bigg Market in Newcastle
to the Lakes in search of the real north.”
The 6th Target by Wigan Libraries’ most borrowed author, James
Patterson:
“Detective Lindsay Boxer is called to the scene of a shooting to find
that three people have been killed, and one of her friends, Claire, has
been shot and lies bleeding, whilst the murderer is on the run. Lindsay
promises Claire that she'll hunt down this killer. But, it doesn't prove
to be so easy in this next thrilling novel in the Women’s Murder Club
series.”
The major publishing event of the summer will be the final instalment of
the Harry Potter series. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K.
Rowling will unveil in spectacular fashion the eagerly awaited answers
to many questions.
Wigan’s libraries also have all the hot new film releases. Make this
summer a real film fest with DVD rental for just £2 for seven nights.
Also, as a special offer, anyone who joins their local library before
Friday 31st August can claim a free DVD.
Here’s some titles that Alison recommends:
Last King of Scotland starring Forest Whittaker (Best Actor 2007 Oscar).
“A Scottish doctor on a Ugandan medical mission becomes irreversibly
entangled with one of the world’s most barbaric figures: Idi Amin.
Impressed by Dr. Garrigan’s brazen attitude in a moment of crisis, the
newly self-appointed Ugandan President Amin hand picks him as his
personal physician and closest confidante. Though Garrigan is at first
flattered and fascinated by his new position, he soon awakens to Amin’s
savagery--and his own complicity in it. Horror and betrayal ensue as
Garrigan tries to right his wrongs and escape Uganda alive.”
Pursuit of Happiness starring Will Smith, Thandie Newton, Jaden
Chistopher Smith
“Based on a true story. Chris Gardner is a bright and talented, but
marginally employed salesman. Struggling to make ends meet, Gardner
finds himself and his five-year-old son evicted from their San Francisco
apartment with nowhere to go. When Gardner lands an internship at a
prestigious stock brokerage firm, he and his son endure many hardships,
including living in shelters, in pursuit of his dream of a better life
for the two of them.”
Libraries can also offer a wide range of free online resources, which
can help with everything from homework and answering quiz questions to
tracing the family tree. Library membership is free and with Wigan
Leisure and Culture Trust managing 16 across the borough there is bound
to be one not far way. For more information visit the libraries’ website
