There’s No Business like Show Business

Dozens of young thespians will be treading the boards this month during Wigan Borough’s first ever Youth Theatre Festival – Platform 07.

The borough has always been a hotspot for dramatic talent. Hollywood stars Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen both have local roots, but now it’s the turn of younger talents to share the spotlight.

Platform 07 is a week long dramatic showcase of the very best in local acting talent. The event is the first of its kind staged locally and has been organised by Wigan Pier Theatre Company, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, with support from the Arts Council.

Other support has been gratefully received from Coalfield Regeneration Trust, Big Lottery Funds – Fairshares and Local Network Fund, Douglas Valley Trust and North West Playwrights.

The curtain goes up on Platform 07 on Saturday 14th July with a musical extravaganza at Wigan Little Theatre and the celebration continues at various theatrical venues until the grand finale at St Joseph’s Hall on Saturday 21st July.

The Festival serves up eight evening performances and three matinee plays, many of which are double-bills of comedy and drama and highlight some of the issues facing young people. Platform 07 is already proving popular with all activity workshops fully booked.

Theatre Company Development Officer, Martin Green said: “This event brings together Wigan Pier’s ten satellite groups along with contributions from other successful theatre groups such as Willpower, Will & A Way and the Wigan Little Youth Theatre. Platform 07 is a chance for local people to support an exciting new venture and enjoy the diverse range of plays and performances from hard-working and talented young people.”

Tickets for the performance at Wigan Little Theatre on Saturday 14th July operate at the venue’s normal prices and tickets are only available from the theatre’s box office on 01942 242561.

For all other performances, tickets are available from Wigan Tourist Information Centre on 01942 825677, or turn up on the door. Individual adult tickets are priced at £5 (£3 concessions). Family tickets are also available for £14 and rover tickets for all shows are £20 (£12 concessions). For further information contact Martin Green on 01942 709305.
