The sun may not have been out, but Team Wigan definitely shined at the
Greater Manchester Youth Games held in Manchester this weekend.
Young sports stars across Wigan and Leigh yet again proved that the
borough is a real hot bed of talent. Team Wigan picked up six gold, four
silver and six bronze medals at the event helping them to end the day at
the top of the Greater Manchester medals table.
Over 300 young people represented Wigan Borough making Team Wigan the
largest team of the ten boroughs participating in the 2007 games.
Jane Bent, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Schools' Sports Development
Manager, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for the young people of
Wigan and Leigh to be held in such esteem among their sporting peers
from across Greater Manchester. I would like to thank every single young
athlete who took part; they represented Wigan and Leigh with pride,
spirit and great sportsmanship.
“Despite the weather the whole event and its build up were a complete
success. The trialling process prior to this event involved more than
2000 young people, and even those who didn’t make the final team were
introduced to local clubs. The process has also helped to enhance the
links between schools and clubs.”
Co-ordinated by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and featuring performers
from all corners of the borough, the team put in a sterling performance
in Saturday’s stormy conditions. Of particular note was Team Wigan’s
success in the duathlon (running and cycling) - the girls and boys teams
both picked up individual gold and bronze medals.
Team Wigan’s full results were as follows:
At Sports City: There were gold medals for Beech Hill Primary School who
represented the borough in the cheer leading event. There were also gold
medals for the under -15s and under-13s tennis teams. Both the boys’ and
girls’ basketball teams won silver medals, and the badminton team won
the bronze medal. Due to the bad weather the athletics and netball
events were cut short.
At Broughton Park: Team Wigan won a silver in the girls’ tag rugby event
and a bronze in the girls’ under-13s cricket.
At Belle Vue: In only their second year together the volleyball teams
performed magnificently; the boys’ under-15s team won gold, and the
girls' under-15s won bronze. There were also bronze medals for the boys’
under-15s, and the girls’ under-13s hockey teams.
At the Aquatics Centre: The waterpolo team won the silver medal.
