Journey Into Green at the Wonderful Wiend

Green issues are currently top of the world’s agenda. Trying to get the environmental message across to children can prove challenging, but the Wiend Children’s Centre, Wigan may have the answer.

The Wiend, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, is offering to take five to eleven year olds on a ‘green’ journey around the world this summer, in a bid to help save the planet. They are holding a series of activity events continuing throughout the summer, starting on Tuesday 17th July, which aim to raise environmental awareness through play and art.

Activities such as an ‘Urban Art Day’ on Friday 14th August, will involve children using junk and recyclable materials, such as cans, plastics and rubbish to create art work. Recyclable and natural materials will also be used to make costumes, which will be shown in a fun parade on Tuesday 21st August.

Andrew Pickup, Wiend Children’s Centre Manager said, “This is a great opportunity to teach children the value of the resources around them, not only because they can help the environment by recycling but can use them for play.

“We are using games and craft sessions to discuss elements of nature such as animals of the rainforest and Polar Regions. The Wiend is a fun centre for all children to socialise and develop through language and learning.”

Children will also have the chance to let off some of that summer steam with the ‘Wet ‘n’ Wild day’ on Friday 10th August. Weather permitting, water will be the feature for the day and there will be a slide, paddling pool and plenty of games at the Wiend’s very own mini water park.

Alternatively, ‘Urban Games’ will take place on Friday 17th August as participants are invited to bring the games of the ‘street’ to the Wiend. Andrew explained, “This is a chance for the children to educate us on the games they play at home. Games such as hop scotch and skate boarding are old favourites but I’m sure the young people have many more new alternatives.”
