Wigan Borough’s very own showcase event for
community art talent, ‘Arts for All’, is already sparking chaos in
Leigh.
The free family event, which takes place at Haigh Hall and Country Park
on Sunday 22nd July, also supports many different community projects
throughout the year. One project which has had a huge impact on children
in Leigh is ‘Carnival Chaos’ organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust’s Play’In Out Team.
The team, supported by Manchester based artist Mandy Beck-McKim, worked
with children from Leigh Central and Leigh Sacred Heart Primary Schools,
to produce carnival costumes, art work and musical instruments to be
showcased during the Arts for All Festival.
The team used scrap resources from a variety of sources, including Wigan
Play Association's Playful and Resourceful Centre and the children’s
homes, to show how ‘scrap’ materials can be transformed and re-used
creatively.
Diane Winnard, Play Development Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust, said, “Carnival Chaos highlighted the importance of recycling,
protecting the environment and enjoying cultural differences to local
children. We were very keen to ensure that the children had a fun time
but also appreciated the value of re-using materials.
“There is a diverse mix of ethnic groups in the Leigh area now, so we
also used this project to create a better understanding of cultural
differences amongst the children. The children mixed very well together
and the results show that play and creative activities can have a
positive impact on children understanding and appreciating their
differences and similarities.”
The results of Carnival Chaos will be showcased at ‘Arts for All’ at
Haigh Hall and Country Park on Sunday 22nd July. Arts for All is
organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust. The festival day is free
and includes folk music, theatre, dance, visual arts, craftwork and
other traditional art forms.
