Hollyoaks Star to Mark Tyldesley Library’s Make Over

The newly refurbished Tyldesley Library will be officially re-opened with a fanfare celebratory event on Thursday 5th July.

From 10am to 5pm the public are invited to join in a free day of activities ranging from massage to computer gaming to mark the formal re-opening of the re-vamped facility. Leah Hackett, star of TV soap Hollyoaks, will also be on site to join in the fun and formally re-open the library at 12.30pm.

The library will have a fresh new look and some areas that were previously out of use are being brought back to life. The Explore brand has also been fully introduced to give the library a more welcoming and friendly environment.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust initially spent £55,000 (from Wigan Council’s maintenance fund) to partly refurbish the facility in 2006. The latest work has been completed at a cost of £14,000 as part of continual improvement work scheduled for the library.

Taryn Pearson, Head of Libraries and Information for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said, “We are delighted to be re-opening on schedule and we hope many of our regulars and new customers will come along on Thursday 5th July to help us celebrate. We realise it is not ideal to close a library for even a short length of time and we would like to thank people for their patience. We hope our customers will approve of the new brighter, more welcoming feel the library now has.

“Some of our libraries are housed in ageing buildings but we are committed to using our resources as best we can to bring them up to date and to provide a library service that is inviting and exciting for all people of all ages.”

The timetable for the opening day activities includes:
• 10am to 1pm - Indian Head Massage
• 10.30 to 11.30am - Teddy Bears Picnic
• 12.30 to 1.30pm - Celebrity visit and opening
• 2 to 3.30pm - Adults art workshop
• 3.30 to 5.30pm - Children’s art activities (5 to 12 years)
• 4 to 5pm - Play Station 3 competition (10 years plus)

There will also be quizzes for adults and children and a free raffle. For those who cannot attend Thursday’s opening, Kevin the Klown will be providing free family entertainment on Saturday 7th July from 11am to noon.

The library’s regular events will also resume after the re-opening. Under 5’s story times will return every Monday, there will be regular reading groups on Tuesdays and a new three week Internet Course begins on Friday 13th July.
