Members of the public have inundated Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s
customer helpline with shocked calls following numerous sightings of
reindeer hoof prints at Haigh Hall this weekend.
The Trust feel it is necessary to reassure the public that the sightings
are genuine following an elaborate operation to keep Haigh Hall and
Country Park’s special visitor top secret.
Haigh Hall Deputy Manager Claire Duffy said: “We would like to reassure
our visitors that these sightings were genuine, we tried to keep this
event a secret to ensure that there wasn’t a stampede of visitors to
Haigh. Santa took time out of his busy toy making schedule to fly into
Wigan from Lapland this weekend to officially start our Christmas
celebrations at Haigh.
“We put in a special request to Lapland some months ago asking Santa to
sprinkle some Christmas magic at Haigh and we are glad to say he will be
returning on three more Sundays in the run up to Christmas. Haigh is
definitely the place to be this Christmas – we have everything from
Murder Mysteries to pantomimes on the menu.”
Santa and his helpers happily posed for photographs with those luckily
enough to see him as he officially opened Haigh’s Christmas Village
kicking off a series of yuletide themed events for all the family.
The Christmas Village includes Santa’s Grotto, a Christmas craft fair
with activities, Christmas lunch, brass bands, carol singers, mince
pies, mulled wine and roast chestnut stalls. The village is open every
Sunday until 16th December from 11am to 4pm.
In addition, Haigh Hall presents traditional pantomime fun with Jack and
the Beanstalk in the Grand Ballroom. Young and old can follow the
adventures of Jack as he grapples with the spectacular Giant and Daisy
the Cow. The pantomime takes place at on Monday 3rd (10am and 12.30pm)
and Tuesday 4th December (10am and 7pm). Tickets are priced at £5 for
adults and £4 for children and concessions.
Meanwhile Haigh’s popular Murder Mysteries take on a military twist this
Christmas. Produced by Wigan Pier Theatre Company these special evenings
are set in 1918 when the Hall was used as an army hospital. The
mysteries offer great fun for groups and include a four course meal,
disco with costumes optional. Murder Mysteries take place at 7pm on the
5th, 6th and 12th December. Tickets are priced at £35 each.
Visitors can also enjoy a special Christmas Sunday Lunch in the Hall
every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm, or can party the night away at one of
Haigh Hall’s Christmas Party Nights which include a four course meal and
disco.
