Fairytales from L.A. - David Hockney at The Turnpike Gallery

One of Britain’s most respected and well-known artists, David Hockney, exhibits his own interpretation of the famous Brothers Grimm fairytales at the Turnpike Gallery in Leigh during December.

‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ is a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre, London, on behalf of Arts Council, England and opens on Saturday 1st December and runs until Saturday 5th January. Entrance is free.

Bradford born Hockney, now a resident of Los Angeles, offers a contemporary and often humorous approach to these traditional tales; reflected in the quirky nature of the images.

Hockney applies his unique interpretation skills to six fairytales including the familiar Rapunzel and Rumpelstilzchen; and the rare, Old Rinkrank, Fundevogel, The Boy who left Home to learn Fear and The Little Sea Hare. The exhibition features 39 etchings from 1969.

Born in 1937, Hockney was an important contributor to the British Pop Art movement and is still considered to be one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.

David Hockney, commenting on his interpretation of ‘Rapunzel’ said: "The stories really are quite mad, when you think of it, and quite strange. In modern times, it's like the story of a couple moving into a house, and in the next door's garden they see this lettuce growing. The wife develops this craving for the lettuce that she just must have and climbs over to pinch it, and the old woman who lives in the house next door says well, you can have the lettuce if you give me your child, and they agree to it! If you put it into terms like this and imagine them in their semi-detached house agreeing to it all, it seems incredible.”

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Visual Arts Officer Martyn Lucas said: “These tales are well known across the world and Hockney’s vivid images brilliantly encapsulate the mood and detail within the stories. This is an exhibition that promises to delight young and old alike. We are delighted to share with visitors the skills and imagination of one of our country’s most renowned artists with our visitors.”

‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ is available for viewing from Saturday 1st December through to Saturday 5th January. For further information about this exhibition and the accompanying activities programme contact the gallery on 01942 404469 or turnpikegallery@wlct.org
