The elegance and beauty of ballet will soon
grace the streets of Wigan thanks to a project designed to encourage
more people to enjoy the benefits of dance.
A group of energetic over 50s who have regularly attend dance sessions
in Scholes and Shakerley have been specially invited to take the barre
and practice their pliés and pirouettes in a workshop led by artists
from English National Ballet.
This one-off workshop by one of Europe’s most prestigious ballet
companies, takes place on Tuesday 27th November as part of Wigan Leisure
and Culture Trust’s Fit 2 Dance project.
The project aims to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in dance
activities. The regular ‘Dance Moves’ sessions focus on giving people
aged 50 and over the opportunity to become fitter and more mobile
through the art of dance.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Fit 2 Dance Co-ordinator Vicky Thomas
said: “English National Ballet has a worldwide reputation for their work
in community dance education. We wanted to give the ladies who have
regularly attended our sessions a taste of something special; we believe
this is the first time ever that an event of this kind has taken place
in Wigan. We also hope this event will inspire other local people to
come along and benefit from the tremendous health and social benefits
that dance can offer.”
English National Ballet is in Manchester during November for their
performance of The Snow Queen at The Palace Theatre. English National
Ballet Touring Dance Officer Amy Williamson said: “We are really forward
to our visit to Wigan and to working with such a well established group
of dancers. English National Ballet thoroughly enjoys working with over
50s groups and we are always thrilled by the enthusiastic response from
participants.”
This event is supported by Super Output Area funding and through the One
Voice Residents Association in Scholes. Chair of the One Voice Barbara
Nettleton said: “All of the ladies who attend the group are eagerly
looking forward to this event. It is something different and exciting
and we hope it will inspire the ladies involved to enjoy new pursuits
and activities such as ballet. This is the type of cultural activity
that we are continually looking to develop at Sunshine House.”
Dance Moves sessions are open to anyone aged 50 and over on every
Tuesday from 11am to 12.30pm at Sunshine House, Scholes and every
Tuesday from 1.30pm to 3pm at Shakerley Community Centre, Shakerley.
Each session costs just £1 and refreshments are provided.
There are currently still a limited number of places available for this
