‘From Wigan to Leigh’ at the Turnpike Gallery

Photo Opportunity: Photographers are invited to attend the opening of ‘From Wigan to Leigh’ on Saturday 10th November from 12pm to 2pm. Other preview opportunities are available on request. Contact Chris Dunbar on 01942 486937 or the gallery directly on 01942 404469.

Over 400 paintings and drawings by Wigan and Leigh artists will be showcased at the Turnpike Gallery in Leigh this November.

‘From Wigan to Leigh’ features the work of eight local art groups including: Ashton Art Group; Atherton Arts; Bristles Art Group, Leigh; Leigh Community Art Group; Lowton and Golborne Art Group; Art and Soul, Hindley; Standish Art Group; and Studio 77, Leigh.

The exhibition is free to view and opens at 12pm on Saturday 10th November running through to Saturday 24th November.

Visual Arts Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Martyn Lucas said: “We are proud to showcase local talent here at the Turnpike. Hundreds of works, depicting a range of topics from landscapes to portraits, still lives to colourful abstracts, will be on show. There is a thriving visual arts scene in the borough, many of the art groups featured exhibit throughout the year across the region. This exhibition celebrates the diversity and talent of the many members from each group.”

Complementing ‘From Wigan to Leigh’ is a display of ‘Beer Mats’ and ‘Dream Clouds’ from the Turnpike’s Big Draw events in October. Visitors to a number of cafes and bars in Leigh were invited to draw on specially made beer mats as part of a national week of drawing events. Also marking the Campaign for Drawing’s ‘Big Draw’, was a market stall in Leigh encouraging contributions from passers-by to draw their dreams.

On the final day of the exhibitions, Saturday 24th November from 10am-3pm, there will be the opportunity to buy original and affordable arts and crafts at a special ‘Festive Fever’ Christmas market in the Derby Room.

Other events and activities for all the family are planned throughout the Turnpike Centre on the final day as part of the ‘Festive Fever’ celebration. For further information about ‘From Wigan to Leigh’ and the accompanying activities programme contact the gallery on 01942 404469 or via turnpike@wlct.org.
