Media Opportunities: Photographers, press,
TV and radio journalists are invited to attend this event on Saturday
3rd and Sunday 4th November at Robin Park Sports Centre, Loire Drive,
Wigan. Please contact Tim Peake on 0845 1297129 ext 2533 to arrange
attendance. Pre-event media opportunities are also available on Friday
2nd November when hundreds of local children will be trying out the
apparatus for themselves with the help of Britain’s best male gymnasts.
The elite of the UK’s male gymnastics talent will descend on the Robin
Parks Sports Centre in Wigan to compete for the British Championship
Titles over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th November.
The field of gymnasts on display is one of the strongest to ever compete
in a British Championships as the British gymnasts have made great
strides on a world level in 2007. The recent World Gymnastics
Championships were a fantastic success for Team GBR who is now firmly
placed amongst the front runners in world gymnastics.
European silver medallist Daniel Keatings will compete head to head
against his great rival and team-mate Louis Smith, the World Bronze
medallist, Commonwealth and European Junior Gold medallist on the Pommel
Horse.
This is just one of the mouth watering battles to take place over a
weekend of competition that will see British Champions declared in four
age groups culminating in the crowning of the 2007 Senior British
Champion. Last year’s champion and Great Britain captain Ross Brewer
will be fighting hard to defend his title.
The crowds will be treated to a great range of action on six different
pieces of apparatus and once again the spectacle of gymnastics will be
available for FREE for children aged under 14. The all-around
competition will see gymnasts compete on all six events with scores
added to decide the final placings.
As an extra treat, on Sunday, there will also be a hi-octane 'British
Masters Apparatus Championships’ that pits the very best on each
apparatus against each other.
Trevor Low, Chair of the Men’s technical Committee said: “The last two
years has seen unprecedented progress in British Men’s gymnastics, with
the team jumping 8 places in the World rankings up to 15th, winning 2
individual places at the Beijing China Olympics. The target of making
the top 12 teams for the London Games in 2012 is ambitious but
achievable. British Seniors had better watch their backs. There are some
brilliant juniors competing this year who are determined and able to
steal places in the National Team”.
Rodney Hill, Chief Executive of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said:
“We are delighted to be hosting this prestigious national event again
this year. The quality of the athletes on show is sure to inspire our
local talent to work harder and develop their own skills further.
Children will also be able to enjoy all of the action for free; a great
incentive for families and young people to come and experience this
awe-inspiring event.”
