Around 700 people enjoyed a thrilling ‘Last Night of The Proms’
celebration at Pennington Hall Park on Saturday evening.
The weather was fine, the melodies were stirring and a mood of
celebration and patriotism swept through the audience as they enjoyed
their picnics to music ranging from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Elgar.
The Tyldesley Band, under the dynamic baton of conductor Rob Taylor,
ensured much loved classics were played with pride and precision. The
dulcet tones of singer Lisa Mannion were much appreciated as she
delivered sensitive and emotional interpretations of ‘Keep Smiling
Through’, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ and crowd favourite ‘Jerusalem’.
The evening climaxed with the ‘1812 Overture’ (Tchaikovsky) and ‘Land of
Hope and Glory’ (Elgar) as fireworks exploded into the Pennington night
sky. Flags were waved and everyone sang.
‘Last Night of the Proms’ at Pennington Hall Park was organised by Wigan
Leisure and Culture Trust in conjunction with the Leigh Townhsip Forum.
Park Community Liaison Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Anne
Cockram said: "It was a stirring night of fun for everyone who came
along. The atmosphere was superb and it was great to see such a wide
range of age groups here enjoying the uplifting entertainment. I would
like to thank the Leigh Township Forum for their support of this event
and all of the performers who were superb."
