The Turnpike Gallery’s latest exhibition
‘Unbound’ incorporates the work of new and established artists with
local, national and international profiles.
Caroline Broadhead, Maxine Bristow, Susie MacMurray and Elizabeth Smith
have created work exclusively for Unbound which opens on Saturday 15th
September and runs through to Saturday 27th October. The artwork on show
takes its inspiration from the gallery’s unique sense of space and from
Leigh’s proud industrial heritage.
Turnpike Gallery Co-ordinator Louise Clennell said: “This work was
specially commissioned for the Turnpike Gallery. Each artist engages
with the gallery’s space in playful, challenging and revealing ways,
whilst drawing on the industrial heritage of Leigh. Unbound will spark
the imaginations of people of all ages and demonstrates how contemporary
artists continue to engage with traditional materials and techniques.
This exhibition will also be especially inspiring to those interested in
the town’s unique heritage.”
Caroline Broadhead explores the use of domestic textiles by creating a
mirror rug (pictured). The shiny surface of the rug draws the viewer’s
attention downwards to the floor before revealing the overlooked
architecture of the gallery ceiling. The contrasting characteristics of
the gallery’s interior are laid bare.
Maxine Bristow has created a textile ‘barrier’ that explores the ways in
which textiles mediate between the body and architecture. Maxine’s work
contrasts sharply with its intimate and highly labour intensive means of
production.
Susie MacMurray’s work takes on the theme of fragility. Lumps of coal
hang, netted, in ordered lines across the gallery wall; a reference to
the disintegration of the coal industry and a reminder of the issue of
global warming.
Elizabeth Smith has created an installation using traditional techniques
including hand knitting and crocheting. Her beautiful, yet menacing
piece takes inspiration from seaweed, ferns and lichens.
Unbound opens with a special viewing on Saturday 15th September from
12pm to 2m. The exhibition is free to view and all are welcome to the
opening event. A programme of workshops for adults and children
accompanies the exhibition.
