Young Designers Get Creative to Promote Library Services

A competition that encouraged children to design a new poster advertising Wigan Borough’s library services has been such an overwhelming success that Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has doubled the amount of prizes on offer.

Wigan Schools’ Library Service, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, asked young people across the borough to design a poster that would attract new visitors to libraries. Over 700 entries were received and the winning posters will now go on display within libraries, schools and other Trust sites.

The competition was open to children in all primary and secondary schools across the borough. Children at primary school level were asked to design a general poster to promote the borough’s public library services.

The primary category winners were Kristen Naylor and Chloë Wilding. Kristen’s amazingly bright blue rocket flying over an orange planet really caught the judges’ eyes, whilst all of the judges loved Chloë’s book-reading spider.

Secondary school pupils had to design a poster that would promote some of the lesser known services, such as the Home Delivery Service and free internet access. The secondary school category winners were Charlie Davies and Emily Johnson. Charlie’s ‘Where Can I…?’ poster really impressed with its smart artwork, and Emily’s ‘Fairytale Library’ successfully conveyed the idea that Wigan Borough’s libraries are now more up to date than ever before.

In addition to the main prizes, two designs to promote the Home Delivery Service really stood out; the vibrancy and energy of Emma Hulme’s design, and the clarity of Toby Mear’s poster with its message, 'we'll come to you'.

Rob Sanderson, Schools Library Service Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: “The idea of the competition was to engage with young people and give them an opportunity to play a creative part in the promotion of the library service. Often children can look beyond the obvious and they really did come up with some fantastic ideas.”

Originally, the prize for each category was a £100 gift card, kindly donated by competition sponsors Borders, and an all-expenses paid author visit for the winner’s school. However, due to the excellent response in both quality and quantity, the number of prizes were increased.

Rob continued: “The standard of the entries we received was so high that it was starting to prove impossible to pick the winners. We decided to pick four winning designs to be made into posters along with an additional two prizes of £50 gift cards to allow two further designs to be made into postcards to promote the Home Delivery service. We’d like to say a big thank you to all the children and young people who took part in this competition as well as to Borders for their help by supplying prizes.”

Gift cards will also be awarded to children who used the most inspiring wording on their designs and their quotes will appear on a range of free bookmarks available throughout the borough’s sixteen libraries.
