Hundreds Flock to Lowton and Golborne for Summer Sports Camps

Young people in Lowton and Golborne have been proving they have a real appetite for sport this summer.

Over 300 children from the area have attended a series of multi-skills sports camps organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit.

The camps give young people a chance to learn new sports skills from qualified sports coaches and socialise together in an energetic but secure environment. The camps have been hosted at Lowton High School and Golborne Parkside Sports Club.

The sports camps are a result of the close links that the Sports Development Unit has developed with the Lowton and Golborne Township Community Safety Group. The group includes Wigan Council’s Community Safety Team, Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire Service and the six local ward councillors.

Mike Watson, Sports Development Officer, for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: “This summer’s camps have been a real success. We are delighted with the numbers we have had at the camps and the attitude and enthusiasm for sport shown by local children. We hope that the camps success can help young people to learn new skills and develop a good community spirit.

“We would like to thank the local ward councillors who made a significant contribution to this scheme. Their faith in using these camps to provide children with healthy activities and as a tool to help counter anti-social behaviour issues has been justified.”
