Sprinting sensation Hayley Jones recently returned from the Junior
Championships in Hengelo, Holland with two gold medals under her belt.
Now she’s looking to the future and she believes Robin Park will keep
her right on track for gold.
Wigan Harrier Hayley, who is dubbed ‘little miss dynamite’ because of
her small stature, won double gold for 200 metres as well as gold and
silver in the respective 100m and 400m relay squads in July.
Hayley trains at Robin Park Arena, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust, under the guidance of Harriers Head Coach, Don Moss: “The
facilities here at Robin Park Arena are among the best in the country.
When athletes come here for competitions, they are astounded at what is
available to the Harriers and many comment on the new polyurethane
track, which is a lot softer and more comfortable to run on than
standard tracks.
“But, most importantly, what makes this place special is the staff. They
are superb and will go out of their way to help you, this makes it so
much easier to do my job and focus on Hayley and other athletes.”
Albino Ferro, Centre Manager for Robin Park, is delighted at the
recognition the recently installed polyurethane running track is
receiving: “When we have extremely talented athletes such as Hayley
representing the Arena, it is only right that the facilities should
reflect their high standards. This investment has helped Wigan Harriers
and our Sports Development Unit to continue to provide activities and
events for young people to enjoy. The new track is a sign of Wigan
Leisure and Culture Trust’s commitment to Getting Wigan Active it is
ideal for high performance athletes and the general public too.”
There is no doubt Hayley is destined for the 2012 Olympics but there is
hope yet for Bejing, as she explains: “To qualify for next year’s games
I need to improve my time of 23.27 to 23.20 seconds. I am determined to
better my performance with a little help from my coach and the
facilities I have access to at Robin Park.”
The £180,000, state-of-the-art running track was installed at the
award-winning Robin Park Arena last August. The track was marked to
strict IAAF standards to ensure that the track continued to host major
UK athletics events.
