PSST… have you heard about the live gigs that are being held in local
libraries? But there’s no need to whisper – the mini tour headlined by Wettar is all about breathing new life into libraries by using them as
venues for, of all things, live music.
The local bands will play Platt Bridge Library on Saturday 11th August,
Marsh Green Library on Saturday 25th August and The Wiend’s Children
Centre on Saturday 1st September. All the gigs are free entry.
The gigs are being organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust in
conjunction with Just About Musicians (JAM), as part of the drive to
remove old prejudices and re-invent libraries as 21st century community
centres with unparalleled access to fresh ideas and experiences. Big
time acts, such as The Killers and Jarvis Cocker, have voiced their
support for library gigs.
Wiend Centre Manager Andrew Pickup said: “Libraries are no longer places
to simply sit down and be quiet. The Explore brand that is being rolled
out across our libraries has given them a fresh look and now we’re
working hard to put on a wide range of events and activities that show
libraries are fun places that are open to everyone.
“During the past year, we’ve had MCs and DJs performing and we held the
first ever gig in a Wigan library at The Wiend in July as part of the
North by North West Festival. These events have drawn large numbers,
giving us an opportunity to show why our libraries are great places to
explore books, to discover the world around us and to meet friends.”
Wettar and a selection of other great local bands will play the library
gigs having recently participated in the Just About Musicians (JAM)
project. The 90 hour accredited programme gives young bands the best
possible start by teaching them things like how to get the most out of
practise, improving performance and about the reality of the music
industry.
Indie-punk, pop rockers Wettar are certainly looking forward to cranking
up the amps and putting on a show during the libraries mini tour.
Singer Ryan Sanderson says: “We are really looking forward to it. It
will be great fun, an excellent way for us to gain some more gig
experience and a chance for us to get noticed.”
Dan Owens, JAM Head Tutor says: “This is a chance for young people to
see libraries in a different light, allowing them to watch people their
own age making great music, which the featured bands have written
themselves.”
All the library gigs will be held between 1pm and 3pm and are free to
enter. For more information contact Andrew Pickup at the Wiend
