Don your spurs and dance around your tipi as Wigan Borough goes all Wild
West on National Play Day on Wednesday 1st August.
The Wild West themed National Playday event, organised by Wigan Leisure
and Culture Trust’s Play Team, takes place at Heywood Avenue play area
in Golborne. The annual event, which last year was attended by over
2,000 people, is completely free and runs from 10am through to 3pm.
This special nationwide celebration aims to raise awareness of the
importance of play. Now in its 20th year, it is the most popular event
in Wigan Borough for children aged between two and thirteen.
Activities this year include a massive under five’s play area; a
volleyball and games arena; a variety of bouncy castles and trampolines;
and an inflatable slide. Other favourites include a specially made sand
area, arts and crafts, face painting and a karaoke disco.
Deb Freeman, Play and Early Years Manager for Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust, said: “This is the largest fun day for children in the Play
Team’s calendar. We have worked in partnership with the Wigan Play
Association to organise what we hope will be the best Playday yet. We
will have a fantastic range of free activities on site, the highlight of
which is our incredible 21 foot tipi in keeping with our Wild West
theme. So come along dressed as a Cowboy or Indian. Why not make a day
of it by bringing a picnic, not forgetting your sun cream or a raincoat?
“Our aim is to encourage parents and carers to ensure children take part
in play activities. Play is extremely beneficial for a child’s long term
health and social well-being. We mean to show how important it is for
all children to learn how to interact and socialise through play.”
National Playday is free and takes place on Wednesday 1st August from
10am till 3pm at Heywood Avenue play area in Golborne. Parking is
available at Golborne High School.
