Thumbs Up for Pennington

Your parks have never been so popular! The results of a recent visitor survey prove that Pennington Flash Country Park is inspiring ‘Pride in Your Parks’ not just in Leigh but across the region.

Between May and June this year, around two hundred visitors were questioned as part of the most comprehensive survey ever conducted at Pennington Flash, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.

Visitors were asked how satisfied they were with the park overall – satisfaction levels were 100 per cent; 65 per cent of those surveyed were ‘very satisfied’ and 35 per cent said they were ‘satisfied’.

The park was also highly valued for its health and well being benefits. An outstanding 94 per cent of people agreed that coming to the park improves their health and a significant proportion commented on the positives of the park as a place to relax, unwind and de-stress.

A reassuring 93 per cent of visitors either strongly agreed or agreed with feeling safe in the park - compared to the recent nationally published survey of only 65 per cent for the same question.

Peter Alker, Senior Countryside Ranger for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: “The whole team at Pennington Flash are extremely pleased with these results. We hope that more people will start to realise that parks have so much to offer, whether it’s walking the dog, enjoying a picnic or just getting a breath of fresh air. With summer finally here there a many activities to enjoy at Pennington Flash such as golf, health walks, and orienteering.”

The survey also proved that Pennington Flash is attracting visitors from across the North West who are suitably impressed. Sixty seven per cent of the people surveyed came from within the borough with most from the central or east side.

Of the 33 per cent that came from outside the borough there was a good regional spread from the Wirral in the west to Oldham in the east and from Chorley in the north to Warrington in the south. There were also some visitors from even further a field including Kendal, Lancaster and Blackpool in the north and three from the southwest as far as Exeter.

Peter continued: “The spread of visitors confirms Pennington’s status as both an important asset for the local community, especially the Golborne and Leigh Townships, and as a regional visitor attraction. However, we are not taking anything for granted. We are now drawing up an action plan to target key areas for improvement. Areas needing attention include dog fouling, extra seating and the provision of play equipment.”
