Wigan’s CV for a Brighter Borough

A new DVD that captures the pride and vibrancy of the people who live in the Wigan Borough is released today.

‘Cultural Vibrancy: A CV for a Brighter Borough’, produced by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust in collaboration with the Cultural Partnership and Mirabilis, illustrates the important contribution that leisure and culture makes to life in Wigan, Leigh and the surrounding areas.

The short film, which has been made to highlight the Cultural Partnership’s new manifesto, is now available to view on Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s website at www.wlct.org and can be loaned for free from libraries across the borough. Personal copies are available on request.

The film captures Wigan Borough’s cultural progress and is explained throughout by writer, broadcaster and celebrated Wiganer, Stuart Maconie. Viewers gain a sense of the borough’s huge spectrum of local opportunity and talent across the arts, sport, heritage, play, libraries, parks, and tourism.

The film begins by stepping back in time to the coal mining and cotton mill days of industrial Wigan before switching to the town’s modern image of cultural activity and extensive leisure opportunities.

Viewers can also take a behind-the-scenes peek at the construction of the £83 million Leigh Sports Village. Local volunteers shine throughout, and are given recognition for all their hard work. The film hopes to inspire more people to get involved with the borough’s projects and activities and to encourage support from other organisations to engage in future initiatives.

John Hesketh, Community Regeneration Manager for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, explains why the DVD is so important: “This DVD profiles Wigan Borough from a cultural perspective. Anyone who views it will have a fantastic insight into our borough. We think it will improve awareness of culture and the role it plays and will spark debate and discussion among local people and our partners in the community, voluntary, public and private sectors. Everyone has a part to play in shaping future plans and we welcome involvement from all.

“The image of the borough has been revived in recent years; leisure and cultural activities have played a key role in changing previously negative perceptions for not only those who live and work here but with those who might choose to invest here. The DVD is an important tool to encourage activity, inspire pride and is proof that Wigan Borough is a place moving in the right direction.”

The Cultural Partnership is led by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and consists of local representatives from the public, private and voluntary sectors. The Partnership’s aim is to improve the lives of individuals and communities across the borough, especially through the arts, children and young people, heritage, libraries and lifelong learning, parks and green spaces, play, sports and tourism.

The Cultural Partnership’s new manifesto pinpoints a series of aspirations for cultural change in the Wigan Borough in the run up to 2012. Some of the highlights of the new manifesto are:
• the designation of at least two additional local Nature Reserves;
• a modern library, swimming pool and leisure facility in Wigan town centre;
• and the implementation of a ten year refurbishment plan for Mesnes Park.

The DVD ‘CV for a Brighter Borough’ is available to view at www.wlct.org and in local libraries. For those who would like a personal copy please contact John Hill on 01942 486926.
