Dance Fever Grips Wigan Borough

Calling all young dance enthusiasts!

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Fit 2 Dance Project is launching two brand new dance events this summer for young movers and shakers from all corners of Wigan Borough.

Whether it is sizzling salsa steps or creative contemporary moves, junior dance fans will be put through their paces at the ‘On the Move’ summer dance school later this month. The project includes a variety of workshops covering a range of dance styles for eight to eleven year olds at schools in Lowton, Higherfolds and Hagfold from Monday 23rd till Friday 27th July.

On The Move is funded by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust in partnership with Wigan Council's Extended Learning Team and Lowton Community Sports College. Lowton East Councillor Ian Franzen has also made a significant contribution to the project through Brighter Borough funding.

The five day event is led by professional dance teachers. Each group will take part in workshops over four days, of Latin, Contemporary or Indian dance and the final day will consist of live performances.

The second project, ‘Strictly Street Dance’, will give young people from Atherton and Shackerley a chance to dance at the City of Manchester Stadium. This project is for 12 to 16 year olds and will be delivered by cutting edge dance group ‘Company Fierce Dance’.

Strictly Street Dance will begin with eight taster sessions at Hesketh Fletcher High School and Shackerley Community Centre on July 30th, August 6th, August 13th and August 20th. Those who enjoy the tasters will be invited to a week of workshops at the same venues between August 22nd and August 30th.

Everyone who participates in the full week of dance will be heading to the home of Manchester City F.C. to perform at the Greater Manchester Street Games on Friday 31st August.

Workshop places for both projects must be booked in advance. Young people attending Strictly Street Dance need to bring a consent form signed by their parent or guardian to the first session they attend.

Vicky Thomas, Fit 2 Dance Project Coordinator, for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: “These projects are ideal for young people who have an interest in dance. On The Move is an excellent opportunity for them to get active and having workshops in a variety of different styles is a great way of introducing them to different cultures. Strictly Street Dance is a rare opportunity for young people in Atherton and Shackerley to get top class tuition from a really innovative dance company. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm.

“Dance is a powerful form of self expression, which requires teamwork, commitment and the ability to develop ideas, skills which these projects aim to teach the young dancers as well as increasing their self-esteem. Dance not only tackles the growing problem with obesity amongst young people but also improves flexibility, co-ordination, strength, balance and power endurance. We hope that these projects will inspire those who take part to have the confidence and motivation to be involved in further dance classes and sports activities.”

The aim of the Fit 2 Dance projects is to make learning dance easy and a skill everyone should have regardless of age or experience. Hopes are set high for a dance-tastic time for all those involved in On the Move and Strictly Street Dance.
