Haigh Hall Junior Crowned National Golf
Champion
A young teenage golf sensation from Wigan is
celebrating this week having won the prestigious Golf Foundation
National Junior Championships for 2006. Fourteen-year-old Reece
Cranfield, a member of Haigh Golf Complex’s Juniors won the Duke of York
Trophy by four shots after firing in rounds of 68 and 69 respectively.
Reece’s victory came after two days of tough competition at the Marriott
Forest of Arden Golf & Country Club, near Coventry, in an event that had
over 5,000 entrants from across the UK. Reece now joins a glamorous list
of former champions that includes the likes of Lee Westwood and Justin
Rose.

Modest Reece, is quick to thank others for his success, “I am absolutely
delighted to have won this competition. I would like to say a special
thank you to my parents for their brilliant support and also the
excellent team of professionals at Haigh Golf Complex and everyone at
Haigh Golf Club who have continually encouraged, coached and advised me
along the way.”
Head professional at Haigh Golf Complex, Ian Lee, has witnessed Reece’s
stunning development since he first became a member at Haigh just over
two years ago. Ian says, “This is a great achievement for Reece and we
are very proud of him. It is great to see all of his hard work come to
fruition and it is also great recognition for our golf development
scheme here at Haigh. Reece is one of a number of talented juniors
currently coming through the ranks. As part of Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust’s vision we are determined to give more and more young players the
correct professional advice they need to enjoy golf and also possibly go
on to compete at a high level.”
Reece’s victory also coincides with the completion of the final stages
of Haigh Golf Complex’s redevelopment programme. The course, set in the
beautiful surrounding of Haigh Hall and Country Park, has been
transformed into a championship standard 18-hole course, with an
additional 9-hole course and Himalayan putting green.
The official Golf Foundation Starter Centre is an essential element of
the complex and is crucial to the development of good quality players
from Wigan and the surrounding areas. Mike Round, Chief Executive of the
Golf Foundation, says, “Reece’s performance to win our Golf Foundation
Junior Championships was exemplary and he deserves great credit. We have
seen the excellent work carried out by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust,
from the introduction of golf in more than 120 schools to the creation
of a pathway for youngsters so they can start playing nine and 18-hole
golf at Haigh Hall. The work at this golf facility is clearly a real
success story and part of the proof of that is Reece’s great performance
representing Haigh Hall in our Grand Final.”
