Another Regional First – Wigan’s Free
Weekend of Leisure
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) will complete a unique hat-trick
of regional firsts this autumn by hosting a free weekend of leisure and
cultural activities for everyone on September 9th and 10th.
Following on from the acclaimed free swimming schemes for the over 60s
and those aged 16 and under, residents across Wigan Borough will be the
first in the region to be invited to sample their local leisure and
cultural facilities for free.

‘Your Free Weekend of Leisure’ is specifically tailored to appeal to all
age groups and abilities. Lots of activities will be available for free
across WLCT’s leisure centres, libraries, parks and leisure venues.
Saturday’s events will primarily focus on leisure pursuits, while
Sunday’s activities will celebrate Wigan Borough’s rich history as part
of national Heritage Open Day.
The weekend also marks the second anniversary of WLCT’s ‘Getting Wigan
Active’ campaign, which aims to ensure that people across Wigan Borough
have the opportunity to become more physically, mentally and creatively
active.
Rodney Hill, Chief Executive of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, says,
“This open weekend is all about giving people another free opportunity
to get active. In the two years since we launched’ Getting Wigan Active’
we have continually encouraged people to become more active – not just
physically, but mentally and creatively too. Our free swimming schemes
have been hugely successful and have proved there is a real appetite for
physical activity in Wigan.”
Rodney continues, “We are also keen to show that being active is not
just about sport, we provide a range of services for people to enjoy,
from learning opportunities, to the arts, parks, libraries and heritage.
This weekend will underline the huge range of activities available to
people across the Borough and we are confident that people will take
advantage of this free opportunity and will become more active on a
regular basis.”
There will be over 60 different free activities taking place over the
weekend of September 9th and 10th. Highlights include:
• swimming for all ages
• gym access and inductions for non-members
• multi-sports camps at various leisure centres
• DVD and CD hire at all libraries
• library activities including ‘Libraries in the Park’
• proms style concert and celebration at Pennington Hall Park
• health walks, bat walks and archery
• dance and tai chi taster sessions
• tours of the Way We Were, Haigh Hall, the History Shop and Astley
Colliery
and much more…
All activities are free and are available on a first-come-first served
basis, although some may require booking. For further information please
