Photo Call: Press are invited to the pre-launch of the WOW Festival with Wigan Warriors at the Mesnes Park bandstand at 1.30pm on Thursday 3rd August. Contact Chris Dunbar on 01942 486937.

Wigan Warriors are giving their full backing to Wigan‘s number one festival which takes place at Mesnes Park, Wigan on Sunday 6th August. The Wigan One World (WOW) Festival is a multi-cultural celebration of Wigan’s diversity and involves music and dance from all four corners of the globe.

The event, which was attended by over 5,000 people in 2005, is a free family festival designed to show how art and culture can bring together one world in one park. Wigan’s favourite cultural ambassadors, the Wigan Warriors, are giving their full backing to the event which also features rugby and football tournaments as part of the RESPECT and Kick Racism campaigns.

Chris Wyatt, Arts and Festivals Manager for event organisers Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, says, “The WOW Festival is the perfect marriage between art and sport and so it is fantastic to have the support of Wigan Warriors. Art, just like sport, is very much alive and kicking in Wigan. The WOW Festival is the culmination of a series of events and festivals organised by the Trust each year that help to promote social harmony and give people the chance to have a good time. Entertainment is the order of the day, so if you want the opportunity to see eighteen different nations performing in the sunshine, then Mesnes Park is the place to be this Sunday.”

Local performers will mingle with artists from the Caribbean, Africa and Europe in over 24 live performances on Sunday. As well as the art and sport activities there will also be a pet show and a children’s Punch and Judy. One of the festival’s traditional highlights, the colourful WOW Carnival Parade will circle the park at 3pm.

Wigan Warriors star Wayne Godwin, says, “We are pleased to support such a great event as the WOW Festival and at the same time back Rugby League’s RESPECT campaign. The WOW Festival is a chance to celebrate what a great place Wigan is and what a wonderful community spirit we have here. I would urge all local people not to miss out on a great free afternoon of fun entertainment at Mesnes Park.”

The WOW Festival takes place in Mesnes Park, Wigan, on Sunday 6th August. Activities and performances start at 12pm and run through until 5pm. All events are free to enjoy and families are welcome. All visitors to the WOW Festival should note that the Wigan town centre alcohol ban also applies in Mesnes Park.
