The World Cup may be a distant memory but Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust’s History Shop staff are making sure that the rich tapestry of
world cultures we witnessed in June are still in focus this summer.
The History Shop will be journeying through the borough’s libraries this
summer to deliver a trio of fun children’s workshops, highlighting the
wonders of Japan, the magnificence of the Americas and the beauty of
Hawaii.
Shevington Library will host, ‘An Artistic People’ - a journey into the
mystical world of Japanese culture, on Tuesday 25th July. On Tuesday 1st
August, Ashton Library, will host ‘The First People’ an event
celebrating the Native Americans. Leigh Library will host the final
session, ‘The Beautiful People’, on the 8th August, which will see the
children experience the unique beauty of Hawaii.
Diane Teskey, Heritage Officer with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust,
says, “We have lots of exciting activities in store for the children and
we hope it will open their eyes to the wider world. For example, during
the Japanese workshop we will be delving into the culture of the geisha
women and sumo wrestling. The children will get a chance to explore
objects and props from all different cultures and learn about traditions
in a fun way.
“We will be embarking on all kinds of cultural adventures, such as
learning origami and making traditional costumes such as Hawaiian grass
skirts! We are sure every child who comes along will have a fun time and
will be able to take away anything they make themselves as a memento,”
continues Diane.
Each hour-long workshop starts at 1.30pm, they are suitable for children
aged from 5 to 11 and cost just £1 to enjoy. Booking is essential to
avoid disappointment, contact the History Shop on 01942 828128 or see
