Robin Park – Right On Track

Robin Park Sports Centre and Arena is set for a double facilities boost this summer with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust continuing to invest heavily in Wigan Borough’s sports facilities.

Work on an £180,000 new running track for the award-winning Robin Park Arena will commence in August. The ten-year-old track will be replaced with a state-of-the-art polyurethane track that will help cement Robin Park Arena’s place as one of the North West’s finest sporting venues. The track will also be marked to strict IAAF standards to ensure that the track will continue to host major UK athletics events.

Centre Manager, Mike Woodruff, is delighted at the boost for Robin Park, “We have an excellent reputation to uphold at Robin Park, so it is vital for us to continually maintain our facilities to an excellent standard. This investment will help Wigan Harriers and our Sports Development Unit to continue to provide activities and events for young people to enjoy. The new track is a sign of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s commitment to Getting Wigan Active.”

The track will temporary close from Monday 14th August through to Monday 2nd October, while contractors ERDC, fix the new track in place. The indoor track will remain in operation and exclusive provisions will be made for Wigan Harriers to continue their coaching throughout the closure period.

Meanwhile, Robin Park Sports Centre is to be boosted by a £53,000 investment in new high-tech resistance equipment for the centre’s Profiles gym. Twenty-three brand new pieces of equipment, provided by market leaders Technogym, are being added to the gym’s portfolio.

“The Profiles gym at Robin Park is one of the busiest in the whole of Wigan Borough and we are updating the equipment to ensure that our customers needs are met. The facilities will now be the equal of any other gym in the area,” continues Mike. “It is important that everyone has access to the best of equipment for an affordable price and we will continue to look at ways to improve our facilities and services.”

The new Profiles gym equipment will be available to use from September, call 01942 828550 or see www.wlct.org/activelife for further details. For further details on the Robin Park Arena athletics track please call 01942 404950.
