Can art be noisy? Is sound an art form? The Turnpike Gallery is on a
mission to find out the answers this summer.
‘Audio Art Lab’ is an exciting new exhibition that will take visitors to
the Turnpike Gallery on a journey through sound from Saturday 15th July.
The exhibition features the work of three Manchester based artists Simon
Blackmore, Anthony Hall and Steve Symons. The artists use an eclectic
mix of techniques and electronic wizardry to intrigue and delight
visitors of all ages. They have created an audio chill-out zone, a giant
spinning wheel that produces sounds in response to colours, and an
interactive installation that allows visitors to “draw” sounds onto a
wall of the gallery.
Martyn Lucas, Visual Arts Officer, for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust,
says, “Audio Art Lab is an interactive experience that explores sound
and how it is produced. Each artist has produced works that respond to
the visitor’s physical movements and interactions. This is an exhibition
for everyone. Audio Art Lab is something truly unique that will inspire
everyone from experienced culture vultures to primary school age
children. Everyone who comes along will be challenged to think about
sound in new and exciting ways.”
The exhibition also includes a display of unique ‘Sonic Postcards’ -
aural snapshots of the local area created by children from Hindley High
School and St Wilfred’s Primary School, Standish, in partnership with
the Sonic Arts Network. After visiting Wigan Pier to record different
sounds, the children learnt how to manipulate these sounds using simple
computer software. The resulting compositions were recorded onto a CD
and are available to listen to in the gallery along with accompanying
photographs and sketches.
The ‘ Audio Art Lab’ exhibition opens at 12pm on Saturday 15th July and
runs through to September. An extensive programme of activities for
children will run throughout the summer holidays. Please call 01942
404469 or visit www.wlct.org/turnpike for more information.
