The Folk On The Hill

Photo Call: Press are invited to attend final rehearsals at 7.30pm on Tuesday 11th July at St Gabriel's Primary School, Kensington Drive, Higher Folds, Leigh. Contact: Chris Dunbar on 07883 014706.

A major new Community Theatre production will take place this week on the Higher Folds estate in Leigh involving community members of all ages. This theatrical presentation is the latest outreach drama project from the movers and shakers at Wigan Pier Theatre Company, part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT).

‘The Folk On The Hill’ has been written by Julie McKiernan, a local Leigh resident and regular writer for the Theatre Company. The play has been specifically commissioned for the Higher Folds Community as part of the Coalfield Regeneration Trust’s funding programme, and is organised by WLCT.

This project follows on from last year’s performance of ‘A Higher View’, where youth theatre members aged 12 to 15 gave a performance, based on the memories of the Golden Years Group, about the Higher Folds estate. It is part of WLCT’s commitment to provide young people with the opportunity to get active and perform in front of a live audience.

This year, the established youth theatre will perform with a new junior group for those aged from 8 to 11, with some adults joining in to bring the whole Higher Folds community together for a three-night performance between Wednesday and Friday.

Martin Green, Development Officer for Wigan Pier Theatre Company, says, “The community is the source of inspiration for Julie’s dramatic story. She has taken inspiration from the local area, using the idea of Higher Folds being like an island as it is remote and surrounded by trees. She has blended this with a cast of young and old characters, plenty of atmosphere, mystery, comedy and a touch of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to make an enjoyable play. It promises to be a great night out if last year’s production is anything to go by.”.

Wigan Pier Theatre Company is urging anybody who is interested in watching this show to book their tickets in advance, as last year’s show was a sell-out success! Tickets are available from the Tourist Information Centre on (01942) 825677 priced £5 and £3. Some tickets may be available on the door on the night.

‘The Folk On The Hill’ will start at 7.30pm each night between Wednesday 12th and Friday 14th July at St Gabriel’s RC Primary School on Kensington Drive, Higher Folds, Leigh.
