Wigan Borough has the honour of hosting this year’s Greater Manchester
Mini Games. The event, a spin-off from the GM Youth Games, aims to
encourage primary school children to participate in sport and to
understand the values of fair play.
This year’s event takes place at Robin Park Arena on Thursday 6th July,
and is organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development
Unit. Teams representing Wigan, Bolton, Bury, Rochdale and Salford, will
compete in eight sports including: gymnastics, girl’s football, tennis,
cricket, rugby, basketball, hockey and netball.
The children from years 3,4,5 and 6, will also be treated to star guest
appearances by members of the England women’s football team, England’s
netball team and the Wigan Warriors squad. Mayor’s representing the five
Borough’s will also be present to see the 500 young hopefuls in action.
There will be awards for the winning team and a fair play award for the
team that shows the greatest degree of sportsmanship.
Jane Bent, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s, Schools’ Sport Development
Manager, says, “We are delighted to be hosting this year’s event. The
Mini-Games is a great chance for young children to have their first
taste of participating in this type of competition. We will be rewarding
fair play as well as the winning team. The important messages are that
sport is fun and that sportsmanship and fair play should always prevail.
It is crucial that young children understand the values of good
competition and get a taste for living an active, healthy lifestyle.”
