Sunday 9th July. Contact: Chris Dunbar 07883 014706.
What better way to lift yourself out of the World Cup doldrums than to
enjoy Wigan’s own ‘party in the park’ this Sunday?
England’s footballers may have failed on the pitch, but the finest
talents in the Borough are promising a championship performance at Haigh
Hall in a pre-World Cup final celebration of Wigan’s rich tapestry of
artistic talent.
‘Arts For All’, organised by Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust (WLCT) and
funded through the Greater Manchester Local Strategic Arts, is a free
day of fun that provides a platform for the borough’s artists and gives
the public a unique chance to see what’s happening at grass roots level.
WLCT’s Development Officer Martin Green, who has organised Arts for All,
says, “Sunday’s event has something for everyone and is ideal for
families, culture vultures or just anyone who fancies a few hours of fun
and relaxation in the sunshine. We have a really diverse mix of talent
on show including visual arts activities, exhibitions, craft
demonstrations and live dance performances. We have also deliberately
scheduled events so that football fans will still have chance to see the
World Cup Final afterwards. What better way to get rid of those World
Cup blues than to enjoy some free entertainment on a bright, sunny day
at glorious Haigh?”
Some of the highlights include:
• Performance: Willpower Youth Theatre and Reckless Invention Street
Theatre.
• Music: The Anvil street drummers and The Jill Fielding Band.
• Dance: L&L Superstars, Street Dance Zone, Step by Step Dance, Susan
Kielb School of Music and The Thistle Society.
• Visual Art: Watercolour Challenge-style competition. Visitors will be
able to have their portraits done in the Hall’s foyer.
• Textiles: A fabric project from Elizabeth Smith and the Daisy Chain
Stitchers.
• Photography and art: Exhibitions by Jennifer Green, Upholland Artists’
Society and the Studio 77 Art Group.
• Children: Jayne Seddon and Julia Peat will use the ‘party’ theme to
create a stunning visual project including a balloon launch and many
other children’s activities.
• Film: Documentaries and displays of various local projects that have
taken place within the arts over the last year – this work includes
contributions from the Dance Network, Disability Arts Network, Crossing
Boundaries, Age Concern and the Over 50’s Forum.
Haigh Country Park’s Arts for All event will run from 11am until 3pm on
Sunday 9th July. People wanting more information on Arts for All can
contact Haigh Hall on 01942 832895.
