Have you been making a meal of the World Cup? Well that’s exactly what
healthy eating experts with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) are
doing this month as part of an exciting project to get the borough’s
workers thinking about what they eat.
WLCT has joined forces with organisations like the British Heart
Foundation, the Department of Health, Sport England and the Big Lottery
Fund to pilot the Well@Work project over the next two years. The £1.6m
national project will look at how to improve the health of employees in
the workplace – and one of the most important factors is of course food!
WLCT’s Active Living Officer Alison Gilfoyle is co-ordinating Well@Work
in Wigan and is working in partnership with HJ Heinz and HMP Hindley YOI
on the pilot. “There are a number of different areas we are working with
the two organisations on over the next two years,” says Alison. “But
they are all concerned with the health of the workforce. Wigan does have
this reputation for a place where people eat only pies but we know that
is not the case and Heinz and Hindley YOI are helping to prove this.”
Alison’s first idea to promote healthy eating in the workplace has
already proved a real winner with the two partners. “We’ve given the
menus in the staff canteen at Heinz and Hindley YOI a real World Cup
makeover,” says Alison. “The catering managers at both organisations
have been given a global set of recipes to make a world class menu with
a dish from each of the countries taking part in the World Cup.”
So, for example, risotto alla Milanese is the Italian job on the global
menu but it gets a lot more exotic than that - How about chicken with
shrimp and peanut sauce from Brazil? A sumptuous fish stew from far off
Paraguay or Costa Rica’s favourite feast Jallo Pinto (or beans and rice
to you and me). For staunch England fans it’s roast beef and Yorkshire
pud!
Up to now the far flung fayre has been going down well at Heinz and
Hindley YOI. Jeff Charnock, Head of Human Resources at HM Prison,
Hindley says, "The World Cup menus are a welcome initiative at Hindley.
They provide a platform to promote health and well-being in the
workplace. We look forward to the roll-out of a number of events
designed to address the identified health needs of staff."
Alison adds: “All the menu has been created by nutritionists so they are
not only a chance to try something a little different but they are good
for you as well. We are planning plenty more events such as this one
over the next two years and we will be evaluating the project’s success
at the end. If all goes well we would be looking to include more of the
borough’s businesses and organisations in the long-term Well@Work
project.”
