Decks ‘n’ Books ‘n’ BMXs – Wigan’s Libraries Look to the Future

Libraries have long been seen as quiet areas of seclusion; places exclusively for bookworms. Now a new scheme launched at Wigan Borough’s libraries is helping to break down the stereotypes and open new doors of opportunity for young people.

A taster session held recently at the Wiend Children’s Centre in Wigan, gave young people the chance to enjoy a range of free activities that prove that there is a lot more to libraries than just books.

BMX champion Mike Pardon teamed up with DJ Decks for School’, renowned graffiti artist Scott Winstanley, and Moco’s lead singer Steve Jones (who works at the Wiend Centre) to pass on their skills and demonstrate just how much libraries have changed in recent times.

Andrew Pickup, Wiend Children’s Centre Manager, said, “These sessions went down really well with the young people at the Wiend. It is important that young people know that libraries are just as much for them as they are for all other age groups. Books will always be at the core of our service, but libraries are places of discovery where a variety of new services and exciting activities are now available. This was a chance for people to meet new friends and learn a little bit more about something that interests them.”

The next taster session will take place at Platt Bridge Community Library on Tuesday 16th January from 6pm to 8pm. Similar free sessions will be repeated at the Wiend Children’s Centre and Marsh Green Library in the New Year.
