Thinking and Feeling Art at the Turnpike Gallery

A group of school children from Leigh, who have showed an irrepressible enthusiasm for art this year, are to be rewarded for their efforts by the Mayor of Wigan.

On Thursday 7th December, the Mayor of Wigan, Cllr Mrs Eunice Smethurst, will be making a presentation to the Year Two children of St John’s Infant School, Leigh who have been taking part in a unique art project, led by artist Jane Fairhurst.

The project, co-ordinated by the Turnpike Gallery in partnership with the Leigh Excellence Cluster and Extended Learning Team, sought to engage children with the visual arts.

The work of the children is to be exhibited at the gallery, under the title ‘Thinking Art / Feeling Art’. Their exhibition presents moments along the children’s journey in the form of sketchbooks, photographs, collages and a specially commissioned video of the project.

Martyn Lucas, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Visual Arts Officer, who is based at the Turnpike Gallery, said, “The children and staff of St. John’s have been thoroughly committed to the after school sessions which took place once a week from February to October. Their enthusiasm was a pleasure to witness. The intention of the project was to help the children build self confidence and self expression; develop language and communication skills; and explore emotions through looking at artworks.”

Martyn continues, “As well as exhibiting visual art, the Turnpike Gallery is committed to working with local residents of all ages to provide them with opportunities to become interested in art. Children in particular enjoy the opportunity to become directly involved in art activities. This was an enjoyable project for all those involved and I am sure the children will appreciate the recognition they are receiving from the Mayor.”

The Turnpike Gallery runs a series of workshops and activities for adults and children throughout the year. Details can be obtained from the gallery, by calling 01942 404469 or via email on turnpikegallery@wlct.org. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm and on Saturday from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
